One of the defining features of the ongoing UCP leadership race has been the proposal of an Alberta Sovereignty Act, which would purport to empower the Alberta government to derogate from federal laws or court rulings that are, in its judgment, contrary to Alberta’s interests. This session explores the legal and political implications of this proposal, and seeks to understand its emergence in light of Alberta’s political culture and the recent history of intergovernmental relations in Canada.
