The New Corporation: A Special Screening Featuring a Q&A with Filmmaker Joel Bakan

The New Corporation is the sequel to The Corporation, a 2003 documentary that reflects on the political and social power of corporations in the early twenty-first century.

When The New Corporation was released in 2020, Twitter refused to run paid ads for it on the grounds that they were in conflict with its advertising policies. In response, the film's director, Professor Joel Bakan (UBC, Allard School of Law), mounted a legal challenge against Twitter, claiming that legally permitting its refusal to run ads for the documentary is inconsistent with the values of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (as opposed to Charter rights).

This special screening of The New Corporation will feature an introduction by Professor Bakan, reflecting on his case against Twitter and its potential implications for the constitutional order in Canada. After the screening, Professor Bakan will also be participating in an audience Q&A.
