Dancing Around the Table: Film Screening and Panel Discussion

We're excited to host a special screening of Dancing Around the Table: Part One, a celebrated NFB documentary that tracks the efforts of Indigenous groups to achieve constitutional recognition of their inherent rights in Canada. The screening will take place at Zeidler Hall in the Citadel Theatre and will be followed by a 45-minute panel discussion featuring Professors Emma Feltes (York U), Sarah Nickel (U Alberta), and Shalene Jobin (U Alberta). Full bar service will be available.

Speakers

Emma Feltes

Assistant Professor, York University

Emma Feltes is an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology. She is a legal, political, and public anthropologist whose work examines the structure and operation of Canadian colonialism, with a focus on constitutional law, international law and transnational decolonization, environmental crisis, and climate justice.

Sarah Nickel

Associate Professor, University of Alberta

Sarah Nickel (PhD Simon Fraser University) is Tk'emlupsemc (Kamloops Secwépemc), French Canadian, and Ukrainian, and she grew up in the unceded lands of northern Secwepemcul'ecw and the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Sarah joined the University of Alberta's Department of History and Classics in September 2020 after five years with the Department of Indigenous Studies at the University of Saskatchewan.

Shalene Jobin

Associate Professor, University of Alberta

Dr Shalene Jobin is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Native Studies, Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Governance, and Director of the Indigenous Governance and Partnership program at the University of Alberta. Dr Jobin is the co-creator and founding Academic Director of the Indigenous Partnership Development Program, an executive-level teaching partnership between Executive Education and the Faculty of Native Studies, University of Alberta. Shalene is Cree from her mother (Wuttunee family) and Métis from her father (Jobin family) and is a member of Red Pheasant Cree First Nation (Treaty Six).
