The CCS is delighted to announce a new online event that will take place via Zoom on May 3rd, at 12PM MST. This event will be a moderated discussion about the current issues regarding free speech and social media in the US and Canada.
Attempts to regulate social media have recently generated significant controversy on both sides of the US-Canada border. In the US, Congress is inching closer to passing a bill that could force the removal of Tiktok from US app stores. And in Canada, the Trudeau government has introduced a new online harms bill that imposes obligations on tech companies to restrict and remove specific types of harmful content. Against this backdrop, this moderated conversation will examine some of the major challenges of social media regulation in democratic societies. In particular, it will consider the question of how legislators can navigate the tension between the private nature of social media platforms, on the one hand, and the public function of the expression and debate they facilitate, on the other.
